The Trust aims to present original work that responds and works in harmony with the Blue Oyster space, locale and history.

Proposals 201Propo3/2014
Proposal 2016

Depot Artspace is a thriving creative community in Devonport. With a clear vision, strong philosophy of inclusiveness and a large helping of community can-do Depot Artspace offers a variety of facilities and services to support and nourish the creative spirit.

We are considering proposals for exhibitions, events and festivals in 2016. Before you complete this form, read the philosophy below and the visit Depot Artspace to meet us.

This proposal must be completed digitally. Your proposal will be considered by our gallery team. On acceptance of your proposal you will be contacted by the Exhibitions Manager.

We look forward to reading your creative proposal.

Philosophy and History

The Depot Artspace philosophy of encouragement, support and inclusiveness has been its touchstone since 1996, the year it opened, and has been the basis on which the Depot has grown into a multi-disciplinary creative community encompassing all art forms and supporting artists at many different levels and across all generations. This philosophy is encapsulated in its circular mantra “creating an environment that encourages creating….” Over the years the Depot has been responsive to changing needs, interests, trends and opportunities and has developed services, activities and programmes accordingly. Classical sociologist and utopian, Lewis Mumford, in 1922 describes here the ideal society that the Depot Artspace philosophy aspires to:

“A community whose life is not irrigated by art and philosophy is a community that exists only half alive. The fundamental values of a true community are to be found in poetry, art, music and the free use of the imagination… the production of non-profit-making goods, the enjoyment of non-consumable wealth. Here are the sustaining values of a living culture.”

Your Proposal

1. What are you proposing? Is it an exhibition, and installation, a project, a performance, an event, series of events or is it a festival?

It can be a great idea to align your event/exhibition to existing festivals such as the Auckland Photography Festival or Matariki celebrations. You could even start your own festival and encourage others to take part.

2. What is your artist/exhibition/event statement?

In 150 – 200 words please tell us in third person about your exhibition /performance/event. This will be used for promotional purposes. Your own quotes can be in first person.

3. Please include your artists CV or biography.

This includes a brief personal background, any tertiary education and/or your exhibition history

4. What could you offer or suggest to engage and build your audience? Are you committed to spending some time in the gallery with your exhibition? (including Sundays and public holidays which are part of this agreement.)

Some examples are artists’ talks, workshops or other complementary community events. Audiences like to meet artists/curators. To engage visitors it is recommended that artists spend time in the space to meet the visitors and discuss their work/practice.

5. What are your ideas for promotion before and during your event/exhibition/festival?
Promotion is a very important part of your exhibition. Depot Artspace has a mailing list of over 2000 subscribers. Your exhibition will be promoted through our monthly e-newsletter and in the Loud Magazine which is published and printed every 3 months and distributed to Depot Artspace Members. Selected articles may be included in The Flagstaff, Channel Magazine, and local newspapers. We will also promote your show on the Depot Artspace website, The Big Idea, Eventfinder, Artsdiary www.artsdiary.co.nz, Who Arted? A feature on 95bFM’s Morning Glory, Facebook and twitter, and listings in Art News, Artists Alliance and The NZ Herald.

Please explain how you plan to promote your show? How will you use the internet to promote your show? Do you have your own website? Will you use Facebook, Twitter and other social media websites?

6. Supporting Documents:

Please email a selection of high resolution images of your work. Please choose one image as your preferred image for promotional purposes. (This can be changed later if needed). Please email all supporting information, images and video links to chris.cudby@depotartspace.co.nz
