Press kit

Post Cards

 Process

This was the first a tempt to printing on transparencies
what worked:
- I was happy with how it the image printed out on the transparency paper.
- In this experiment i tried to print both sides on the transparency but I wasn't thinking that I had to mirror the image on the printer but I liked how it came out.

What didnt worked:
I want sure how the printer would react to printing on the transparency, the paper got stuck at one point, but it wasn't a big deal because it was just an experiment

I was gonna use both images having two different post cards but that was just making more work for my self and that it was gonna be harder to put info on the bottom design so I decided to go with the first one

I added my Bio on my post card and info and decided not to mirror the image

first print fail didn't now how to us the printer

 Artist Bio
Grace Avealalo, an undergraduate at Manukau Institute of Technology. Born in Samoa and currently resides in south Auckland, New Zealand. Her practice is based around using film, as well as silhouettes within her film to portray her story to the world. A student who is still in search for her own identity within the art world, therefore expressing that through her new film titled, "Unknown".

 Artist Statement

Grace Avealalo
In the past years that I have been studying as an undergraduate, the concept of my work has constantly changed. This has led me to my current practice, working with moving image and silhouettes, creating an idea of the “Unknown.”
The “Unknown” is a film work that I created going along with the idea of silhouettes. I find silhouettes fascinating and relatable to my work because once someone see’s a silhouette they can see the shape of the object and are able to tell what it is but aren’t able to go into details, which is what I wanted to express through my film. This film work places emphasis upon the fact of being in a location but not capable of knowing who you are in that place. This can also be considered as a self portrait, showing how I myself am incapable of identifying myself and where I stand as an artist in the art world. However, I do know that the art world is where I belong.

Artist Proposal

To Michel Lett Gallery
My name is Grace Avealalo I’m an undergraduate student at the Faculty of Creative Arts at Manukau Institute of Technology. I am currently on my second year of my Bachelor and as an art student I’m still trying to find my identity in the art world and this show through my work. Sometimes the uncertainty and confusion in myself as an artist’s, I use to my advantage, and present work that is multi-layered and difficult to read direct meaning into. The work becomes ambiguous, presenting more than one idea, which creates the mysterious and lost identity that perhaps a feeling many students in my age group are wrestling with.
I am a mix media artist in my practice I like to work with verity of medium that way there will be different approaches to take to create my work. In this project the equipment I use for my moving image piece are studio lights, a transparent screen, a camera to capture movement, colour gels to create different colour lights and a model. The transparent screen in placed in front of the camera the model will be behind the screen, while the lights shown to the model the shadow of the model is then cast on the transparent screen and the camera will be capturing the model silhouette movement.
The silhouette represents me, and having this to silhouette typifies me in the art world. The purpose using a silhouette is to convey the idea that I am absent but I’m unaware of my identity; I’m not sure who I am as an artist. The silhouette movement will not be dramatic or inelegant but it will be graceful and refined, this convey the idea that yes I’m not sure of my identity but I’m not afraid nor scared to be where I am. The different lighting colours will convey my creative character, that I may be uncertain and confusion in me as an artist, but it will not stop my creativity. I will also be having some screen prints, the image that is to screen print will be a series of photograph from my silhouette shoot my idea of this piece is make a solid copy of the video clip.
I would be thrilled and honoured to have the opportunity to exhibit my work at your gallery, I’ve have had a look around on my last visit and I saw a space in the gallery that I’m interested to display my work in. The room with the colour walls which I’m unsure of the name, I think would be a perfect space for me to display my work. The wall just outside of this room will also be a great space for me to display my screen prints but I’m open to discuss with you any other suggestions. I hope I get this opportunity to work with you and be able to tell my story to the public with your help.
Thanks for taking your time reading this proposal hope to hear from you soon.

Space Preparation (Home Exhibition)

285 Weymouth Rd Exhibition

I've decided to have my exhibition at home because my film is a self portrait, and that my home is the most relevant place for me screen my video because that's where I spend most of my time and its where I'm mostly influenced. Having my screening at my home was easier for my family and friends to attend. I see my self as a street artist more then a gallery artist, I'm always in to making work that would be interesting and would be eye catching to the public. Having my work in an open space I think was a good decision because it was easy access to public and that anyone that drove pass my house was able to witness my creativity.

- A test run on the projection on house.
- the perfect time to screen was 8:30
-the street lights didn't make a lot of difference so it was no problem even with the cars that were driving pass

option 1

This is the back of the house
pros:
It was dark and it would be good fro projection
it has a wider space
cons:
wall was too high and it was had to get the projection on to the wall

option 2

This is the front of the house shooting it straight on to the house,
pros:
it was easy to project the film on the wall
the hill in front of the house would make the perfect viewing spot
and it was more open to public so that anyone that walked pass or drove pass can see whats happening
cons:
Street light were on would be a issue
cars and their head lights

option 3

This was my other option was having the film playing in my room while the people can view it from standing from outside the house.
but the reflection on the window would have made it hard to view the video.

Exhibition Day

What worked:

This exhibition was a success it went better then I expected. Visually I thought that the video worked well with the space which is the front of my house it was comfortable space the viewers didn't have trouble watching or seeing the projection thanks to the hill in front of the house and I prepared comfortable space putting out cushions and sheets to keep my audience comfortable and warm.

What didn't work:

I would not say this was a problem but it was something that I was nervous to find out with the feed back from my audience, I wasn't sure if they got the concept of my work because it was a bit abstract and it was hard for some people to understand because the video was a personal experience.

What could I have done different:

I should have explained the concept more, and make the film longer.

Depot Artspace is a thriving creative community in Devonport. With a clear vision, strong philosophy of inclusiveness and a large helping of community can-do Depot Artspace offers a variety of facilities and services to support and nourish the creative spirit.

Philosophy and History

The Depot Artspace philosophy of encouragement, support and inclusiveness has been its touchstone since 1996, the year it opened, and has been the basis on which the Depot has grown into a multi-disciplinary creative community encompassing all art forms and supporting artists at many different levels and across all generations. This philosophy is encapsulated in its circular mantra “creating an environment that encourages creating….” Over the years the Depot has been responsive to changing needs, interests, trends and opportunities and has developed services, activities and programmes accordingly. Classical sociologist and utopian, Lewis Mumford, in 1922 describes here the ideal society that the Depot Artspace philosophy aspires to:

“A community whose life is not irrigated by art and philosophy is a community that exists only half alive. The fundamental values of a true community are to be found in poetry, art, music and the free use of the imagination… the production of non-profit-making goods, the enjoyment of non-consumable wealth. Here are the sustaining values of a living culture.”

Michael-Lett

Michael-Lett was one of the galleries that caught my interest, they had a room that had a projection which I thought it would have been a neat space to have my video exhibited.

Pros:
-The projection room was a great space.
-The color of the walls would have worked with my video, my video contained a lot of color and it would have worked well with the room

Cons:
-It was too far
-The projection room was a bit too small

Fuzzy Vibes

Didn't get to go inside this gallery but it looked interesting, the entrance was a stair case going down so it made me carious of work they would exhibit in a space like that.

Pha homestead

This gallery was very formal and I didn't see my work being exhibited there but it was a great place to find inspiration.

RM

Rm was the gallery that caught my attention, it had the most potential out of all the other galleries that i visited room exhibit video and film work, my practice was moving image and projection

Pros:
- room had different section room like space and each space had a film playing, and they provide head phones for the viewers to hear what happening in the film. the wall were covered with a black fabric which made the room dark and perfect for film projections,
Room also had chairs where viewers could sit and would be comfortable

Cons:
Its too far for my families and friends to visit and see my work
Had to give a earlier notice a 6 months in advance.
